Laser Vision Correction In
a normal person the image is focused on the back of your eye called
retina. But in myopia (short sightedness) the eye is too strong and the
far objects are focused in front of the retina and you need minus
glasses or contact lens. In hypermetropia (far sightedness) the eye is
less strong and the close distance objects are focused behind the
retina and you need plus lens to make it focused on the retina. In
astigmatism the eye surface is uneven and the eye is shaped like a
baseball, glasses or contact lens can treat the problem. These problems
can be corrected by LASER vision correction, thus reducing the
dependency on glasses. LASER eye surgery is performed either by
creating a corneal flap when we call it (LASIK), removing the
epithelium, the top layer of the cornea (PRK) or by lifting the
epithelium (EPILASIK). LASIK gives the fastest visual recovery, within 2 days, followed by EPILASIK which can take upto 4 days and PRK takes 7 days to recover. LASIK is almost pain free where EPILASIK and PRK might have some post operative pain for 2 -3 days which can be managed by topical and systemic pain killers. Shortly we will start with INTRALASIK procedure using the Femtosecond laser machine. So far I have done more than 7000 eye corrective surgery with 99% successes. Our re-treatment rate is less than 1-2000 patient. Patient satisfaction rate is more than 99%.
At Al Zahra Laser vision clinic LASIK, EPILASIK and PRK are performed routinely. It is done using the 4th generation latest equipment from CARL ZEISS, MEL 80 machine from Germany. We also use the best microkeratome the AMADEUS from allergen USA. Both these equipments are well known for their precision and accuracy. We also have the wave front treatment available. Every patient undergoes detailed investigation before the laser surgery is performed. These include routine eye examination, computerized eye check-up, wave front and corneal topography (determines the shape of the cornea), size of the pupil (to reduce glare and halos at night), dry eye test, corneal thickness Pachymetry (to reduce the chance of post operative thinning and bowing of the cornea) and dilated retinal examination (to detect retinal holes). Proper patient counseling is done to make them aware of the postoperative expectations. Patients are advised to read the information brochure especially designed for LASER eye surgery. The surgeons operating are well trained and have done fellowship training in LASER eye surgery from reputed institutions abroad. The curriculum vitae are available in the information brochure.
Carl Zeiss Meditec
Carl Zeiss Meditec is the fourth generation Excimer Laser, Offering a Refractive Laser System combining ideally all features needed for optimized Customized Ablation procedures. MEL 80 is Ultra fast laser, with 250 Hz frequency, which shortens the ablation time remarkably thereby increasing patients comfort and also allows faster visual recovery. MEL 80 has Ultra fast Eye tracking through fast IR-camera, which has automatic pupil detection and centration of the laser treatment. Optimized results: The new very small Gaussian spot is so fine it can correct higher order aberrations and yet allows a big overlap for smooth ablation surfaces. A new Prolate Lens Design improves the vision quality under low light conditions (night vision). There is also improvement in the contrast sensitivity. Customized Ablation: The MEL 80 is especially designed for new Workstation concept, which takes all preoperative parameters (personal data) plus the desired individual outcome into account. (E.g. night vision optimization, tissue saving etc.)
Cataract is a condition wherein the normal lens becomes opaque either due to aging or due other reasons such as Diabetes, Thyroid problem, trauma, steroid etc. It is one of leading causes of blindness worldwide.
The person starts to see foggy and the vision is not fully corrected with glasses. In some forms of cataract there is excessive glare and difficulty in day light vision.
Phaco Sutureless Surgery
2.4 mm Phaco-Sutureless Surgery Cataract is treated by surgery. Previously cataract patients where admitted in the hospital for 2-3 days since the surgery required a large incision and sutures. Today with the advent of the ultrasound technique (Phacoemulsification) surgery is performed mostly under local anesthesia with minimal or no admission required. After the removal of the natural opaque lens a foldable artificial lens made of Acrylic is placed in its place with no sutures applied. At Alzahra we also use cold phaco technique thereby reducing the ultrasonic heat related damage to the cornea (front layer of the eye). The power of the artificial lens is calculated using the latest infrared technique called the IOL master from Carl Zeiss, Germany. After the operation, it takes 1-2 weeks for the vision to stabilize and afterwards eyeglasses are prescribed. At Al Zahra we also have option for multifocal and pseudoaccomodative artificial lens, which improves vision for, both near and far objects. The operations are performed on the best phaco machine in the market from Alcon Legacy USA.
Glaucoma Surgery Glaucoma is a condition where in the eye pressure rises. It can present as acute disease with pain, redness, colored halos and foggy vision or with no symptoms that is more common and called the chronic simple glaucoma. People with myopia, Diabetic, Thyroid problems, family history of glaucoma and hypertensives are particularly prone to glaucoma. It is always advisable to check the eye pressure after the age of 45 or if you have any of the above-mentioned illnesses. The main problem in glaucoma is progressive damage of the optic nerve due the increase in eye pressure. Due to the damage of the nerve fibers the person looses the visual field.
Optic Nerve & Visual Field Loss
Ahmed Valve Surgery
At Al Zahra we use the non-contact air puff tonometer and the tonopen to check the intra-ocular pressure. Both these instruments reduce the chance of transmission of infection through contact in the older contact techniques. Visual field test is performed on the latest Octopus 311 machine that has the latest software the peritrend to detect the earliest visual field changes. The field-test take form 30 minutes to 45 minutes depending on the type of examination required. Patients need to wear their distance glasses during the test. Once the glaucoma is confirmed it can be treated with number of eye drops that reduces the eye pressure. Patient needs to follow-up on regular basis to check the eye pressure and to perform the visual field test.
Corneal Ulcer Corneal Dystrophy - Corneal Opacity
ARTIFICIAL CORNEAL CHAMBER FOR DSEAK AND ALTK
Collagen Cross Linkage
Deep Lamellar Surgery
FOR EARLY KERATOCUONUS I USE RGP CONTACT LENSES. FOR CONTACT LENS INTOLERANT INDIVIDUAL, I OFFER EITHER COLLAGEN CROSS LINKAGE OR INTACS AND SOME CASES BOTH OF THEM TOGETHER TO STABILIZE THE CORNEA AND IMPROVE THE CONTACT LENS FITTING AND DELAY THE CORNEAL GARFT PROCEDURE.
Various corneal problems mentioned above need corneal grafting to clear the visual pathway and improve the eyesight. At our department we have the latest equipment to perform corneal grafting. The graft material is imported from United States certified Eye Banks and made available through courier service. The graft quality is thoroughly evaluated for its corneal epithelium, endothelial cell count and meticulous care is taken to avoid transmission of Hepatitis B and HIV through the graft material.
Corneal Graft: Post graft clear cornea
During the corneal graft surgery, disposable trephines are used to reduce the chances of infection and increase the quality control and give better surgical results.
Sub-Retinal neo-vessels central serous retinopathy Retinopathy of prematurity
Retina is the screen on which the images are formed. There are various retinal problems that can effect vision, e.g., Sub retinal neo-vessels due to aging, central serous retinopathy due excessive tension, retinopathy of prematurity in a premature baby due to exposure to oxygen in the incubator, etc. These are routinely diagnosed and investigated using our latest digital camera and advanced imaging system.
Retinal detachment happens due retinal hole that can happen spontaneously, due to trauma or in people with high minus power. We perform early diagnosis of theses cases using the indirect ophthalmoscope and do early laser if there is only holes otherwise the patient is admitted and retinal surgery is performed using the latest ACCURUS machine from USA. An extensive vitreo-retinal surgery is performed using Silicon oil or Gas to attach the retina.
Retinal Hole Examination
Accurus Vitrectomy Machine
Squint is a condition where in the eye either constantly or intermittently moves either inwards or outwards. Many of these children require eyeglasses to correct it. In case they are not treated early they may lead to lazy eye called ambyopia. We also provide occlusion therapy for treating lazy eyes.
Pterygium is another condition common to middle east due to exposure to sunlight. We routinely perform pterygium surgery with conjunctival graft to prevent recurrence.
Corneal injury repair
Corneal injury and other eye traumas require extensive eye surgery to correct the defects. We have the capabilities to perform combined corneal graft, phacoemulsification and reconstruction facilities.
Diabetic retinopathy - Lasered Retinopathy - 532 laser in progress
Diabetic retinopathy is one of the blinding eye diseases. Laser treatment is the only proven means to stop the progression of retinopathy. We have the best laser from Carl Zeiss Germany for retinal treatment. The machine performs almost painless laser treatment with minimal side effect. The treatment is done as an out patient procedure with topical anesthetic drops.
Dry eye is another common problem in the Middle East to lack for humidification in the air-conditioned buildings and due to dry weather. We have puctal plugs and punctual cautery for people with chronic dry eyes. Other procedures like lachrymal surgery, Lid blepheroplasty, and orbital surgery are regularly performed in the department.
Visucam digital imaging system allows us to perform fluorescein angiographies for various retinal problems e.g., Diabetic retinopathy. It also gives digital imaging of the retina for glaucoma follow up patient.
Ocular Ultrasound both A and B scan is performed using the latest machine from Alcon. The latest addition to our department is the IOL Master, which not only calculates the IOL power for cataract surgery but also give the measurement for the corneal power, anterior chamber depth and white to white diameter of the eye for insertion of phakic IOLs. The department also has the latest Hand held auto refractor from NIDEK for performing test for glasses for children and infants who cannot sit in a normal adult auto refractor.
OCT Imaging using the Stratus Machine The eye department has all the modern equipments to perform all the necessary eye examinations and the treatment whenever it is required. Powered with the the best trained staff and with one of the best equipped hospitals in the middle east we promise to provide you with the best treatment.
